Contact information websites

John at inlumient talks about how much he abhors people who use Plaxo.
And I applaud him, because I feel the same way. Lazy people who want me to do their work? I don’t think so. I think it’s rude. And plus, I have plenty of my own work to do. Fill out your own damn address book.

So how do I respond? I sure as hell don’t fill out their Plaxo information. I’m not going to ENCOURAGE people to exhibit rude behavior.
So normally I take it as a normal request for contact information and send it back in my usual method. For me this means emailing them back my vcard. Or, I just trash the email like any other spam.

And plus, why would I want some arbitrary third party (Plaxo) to have my contact information? I don’t.

What also cracks me up is the only people that replied to John’s post are a couple of Plaxo apologists that work for Plaxo.
In fact, if you do a bit of Googling you’ll find that Plaxo employees seem to be quick to respond to blogs entries about Plaxo.

So if you are thinking about using Plaxo or similar contact manager, think about these things:
Does everyone on your address list want spam from you?
Has everyone on your address list given you permission to give their information to a third party?
Do you enjoy working for a third party trying to push their software for free?
